Is it a religion? Is it a cult? Is it a philosophy? Or just a way to exercise the body? What is the point? And what is the goal? How does one get to this goal? Come bring your curiosity and questions as we explore what yoga has become now in comparison to what it was thousands of years ago when it first originated.

Jeanne will draw from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita as well as her own knowledge from years studying with her teachers in a living lineage that comes from the Himalayan Mountains. We will use this dialogue as inspiration into a Pranayama Practice (breathing exercises) and Meditation. This evening is open to all physical abilities.

Most of us are sitting or standing for the greater part of the day and our hips bear the result: tense and tight. We also tend to hold a lot of mental and emotional stress in the hips, which increases the stiffness. This workshop will focus on opening the hips significantly.

We will briefly review how the hips function and learn about the different muscle groups and their direction of movement. We will also bring consideration to the Chakras (energy centers) involved in this area and the emotional qualities that may be blocked due to correlating tightness. With this information we will first flow in a practice to heat the muscles and joints. And then we will move slowly, gradually and deeply into the hips and adjoining muscles from different directions. Be prepared to move. And, be prepared for some long holds in poses as we allow a true stretch that permits any suppressed mental/emotional garbage to be released from the body. Lastly, be prepared to experience more space, freedom and happiness in the body, and quite likely, more of the same in the mind!

Some yoga experience and familiarity with general poses is required.

About Jeanne

Jeanne Heileman, M.A., E-RYT 500, is a Level II Certified ParaYoga Teacher and has studied with the founder, Rod Stryker since 1999. Prior to finding Tantra, Jeanne was a devoted Ashtanga student who later came to appreciate the wisdom of Iyengar, Anusara and Vini yoga, studying with the leading teachers in each style. Living in Los Angeles, she is an esteemed Senior Instructor for YogaWorks, teaching regular classes and teacher trainings. Jeanne’s specialty is discovering the needs of an individual and, using the techniques she has learned from all of her teachers, she guides each student to his/her own Light. Practicing yoga for 28 years, Jeanne has been teaching for 17 years, privately and at studios. When she is not teaching her regular schedule in Los Angeles she is teaching Teacher Trainings, workshops and lectures all around the globe.
